Ok you can do this through below steps: first open the document you want to change the extension and after that go to the Tools>Options>Load/Save now here to change the default extension you can need go to the bottom of panel and under that choose the format that you want.

Re: How to change Default File Extensions in Openoffice
Hello you can also look at Default Programs in your Control Panel if you’re using the windows operating system. Some features of Openoffice and ms office are not compatible so therefore while doing this I think you should take backup otherwise you will lose the data in conversion. If I wanted to change file extension then I use at Default Programs in mine Control Panel and this has been helped me to change the file extension. So I would like to suggest you this…

Re: How to change Default File Extensions in Openoffice
Hello thanks for the replies and I have gone through the first reply but I haven’t find any Options on tools and on earlier Openoffice I only had have Macros, Extension Manager, and Cusomize in tools menu. Now I won’t get any option under tools. Can anyone help on this… I am using OOO (Openoffice) version is 3.3.0. I am running Mac Lion 10.7.2.

Ok one Mac: open the openoffice and after that make click on the Options. now on the Options go to the Preferences in the left most menu item and after that continue as above said.
