The OLPC Marvell and manufacturer are working together to design a 10-inch touch pad for developing countries, but also the general public-in the U.S.. Objective: to produce in bulk and bring the price to $ 100 or less.
The OLPC foundation announced partnership with the manufacturer Marvell processors to design a touch pad to countries in development, but also the United States.
Marvell and the OLPC foundation Nicholas Negroponte will therefore work together to design a line of tablet PCs based on low prices Platform Moby manufacturer. Marvell has unveiled its multi-shelf technology, determined to equip the students.
This partnership should benefit both players by increasing volumes and lowering tablets prices for markets in health and education in the United States through marketing in developing countries.
In a interview with The Wall Street Journal, the founder of OLPC foundation Nicholas Negroponte, in fact confirms that wider market coverage should help drive down production costs and therefore sales.
The proposed $ 100 PC initiated by the foundation, there is now years should lead to the tablet and $ 100. However, Nicholas Negroponte believes that the price could drop further to around 75 dollars from mass production to mass market.
Under the hood, we should find a configuration equivalent to that of Moby, namely a Sugar OS (Linux) or Android or Windows Mobile-supported by Marvell, a 10-inch multitouch screen, a camera in front (also acting as video sensor), an ARM processor (Snapdragon Armada 610), and of course the support of Wi -Fi (but also Bluetooth / FM / GPS).
